Treasures of India: 11 Days Golden Triangle, Khajuraho & Varanasi Tour

Golden Triangle, Khajuraho & Varanasi — Journey Through the Soul of India. India is not a country you visit. It is a civilisation you experience. From the architectural wonders of the Mughal Empire to the Hindu temples of the Chandela Dynasty and the sacred banks of the River Ganges, this tour offers a complete spectrum of Indian history, culture, and spirituality.

Introduction to the Spiritual & Royal Heritage of India

This 11-day meticulously designed journey takes you from the grand Mughal boulevards of Delhi to the desert palaces of Jaipur, through the abandoned ghost capital of Fatehpur Sikri, past the immortal marble of the Taj Mahal in Agra, into the medieval rock fortresses of Gwalior, the enchanted riverside citadels of Orchha, the UNESCO-listed erotic temples of Khajuraho, and finally to Varanasi — the oldest continuously inhabited city on earth, where the Ganges carries the prayers of a billion souls every morning at dawn.

This is not the ordinary Golden Triangle. This is the complete arc of India's imperial, artistic, and spiritual heritage — the monuments, the mysticism, and the moments between that no guidebook can prepare you for.

A Journey That Goes Beyond the Ordinary

Most Golden Triangle tours end at Agra. This itinerary begins there. By extending into the lesser-visited but profoundly rewarding destinations of Gwalior, Orchha, Khajuraho, and Varanasi, you encounter an India that belongs entirely to those willing to go a little further — medieval jungle temples carved by a dynasty of warrior kings, a riverside town the modern world forgot to develop, and an ancient city on the Ganges where Hindu philosophy says time itself dissolves.

Why Choose Root Indians for This Tour

  1. We Know India from the Inside Out : Root Indians was founded by passionate travellers and heritage specialists who have walked every monument, sailed every ghat, and driven every road on this itinerary personally. We do not sell what we have not experienced. Every hotel, every guide, and every routing on this tour has been selected through years of on-ground knowledge — not from behind a desk.

  2. Handpicked Guides Who Bring History Alive: Our local guides are not just licensed — they are storytellers, historians, and insiders who transform a visit to the Taj Mahal or the temples of Khajuraho from a sightseeing stop into a living encounter with history. The difference between a good guide and a great one is the difference between seeing India and understanding it.

  3. Small Groups and Fully Private Departures: We deliberately keep our groups small and offer fully private departures year-round. Your journey moves at your pace, pauses where you are moved to pause, and is never rushed to accommodate a busload of strangers. This is your India, arranged entirely around you.

  4. Transparent Pricing With No Hidden Costs: What you see in our package is what you pay. No surprise monument fees, no compulsory shopping stops, no commission-driven detours to overpriced emporiums. Every inclusion is listed clearly and every exclusion is stated honestly — because trust is the foundation of every journey we build.

  5. 24/7 On-Ground Support Throughout Your Journey: From the moment your flight lands in Delhi to the moment you depart Varanasi, a Root Indians coordinator is reachable around the clock. Missed connections, medical needs, itinerary adjustments — we handle every situation swiftly and personally, because no traveller should ever feel alone in an unfamiliar country.

Best Time to Travel

October to March offers ideal cool and dry conditions across all destinations on this route. December and January are peak season with the most comfortable temperatures. February and March provide pleasant weather with noticeably fewer crowds. Avoid May and June when temperatures across the plains regularly exceed 45°C, and July to September when the monsoon brings heavy rainfall and some road disruption.

Visa and Entry
Most international visitors require a Tourist e-Visa for India, available online through the official Indian government portal. Apply a minimum of four days before travel. The e-Visa is typically granted for 30, 90, or 180 days depending on nationality.

Health Recommendations
Consult your physician before departure regarding recommended vaccinations including Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Drink only bottled or filtered water throughout the journey. Travel insurance with full medical evacuation cover is strongly recommended for all travellers.

Know Before You Go

Carry a Valid ID Card at All Times
Always keep a government-issued photo ID with you throughout the tour. Foreign nationals must carry their original passport for entry to all ASI-protected monuments including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Qutub Minar, and Khajuraho temples. Indian nationals require a valid Aadhaar card, voter ID, or passport. Hotels, monument ticket counters, and security checkpoints across all destinations will ask for ID verification.

Dress Modestly for Temple and Mosque Visits
Carry a scarf or stole at all times. Covered shoulders and knees are required at mosques, temples, and sacred ghats. Removing footwear before entering religious sites is mandatory across all destinations on this tour.

Stay Hydrated and Drink Only Bottled Water
Tap water is not safe for travellers across all destinations on this route. Carry sealed bottled water at all times. Complimentary water bottles are provided daily during your tour, but always keep one within reach especially at outdoor monument sites.

Carry Cash for Local Markets and Small Purchases
While hotels and larger shops accept cards, local bazaars in Chandni Chowk, Jaipur's old city, and Varanasi's silk lanes operate on cash. Keep a modest amount of Indian Rupees handy for street food, rickshaws, small souvenirs, and temple offerings.

Respect Local Customs and Photography Rules
Always ask permission before photographing local people, priests, or cremation ghats in Varanasi. Photography is restricted or chargeable inside several monuments including the Taj Mahal inner chamber and certain temples. Your guide will advise on the spot.

Start Early to Beat the Crowds and the Heat
The best experiences on this tour happen before 9 AM — the Taj Mahal at sunrise, the Ganges boat ride at dawn, and the quiet morning hours at Khajuraho temples. Early starts also help avoid peak afternoon heat and are essential from February onwards.

Is this tour available for solo travellers, couples, and families?

Yes. This tour is fully available as a private departure for solo travellers, couples, families, and small groups year-round. The itinerary, vehicle size, and hotel room configuration are adjusted based on the number of travellers in your group. Children are warmly welcome and customised family-friendly arrangements can be made on request.

Can this itinerary be customised?

Absolutely. Root Indians specialises in tailor-made journeys. If you wish to add extra nights at any destination, include additional experiences such as a cooking class in Delhi or a silk weaving workshop in Varanasi, upgrade your accommodation, or adjust the pace of travel, our team will build a customised version of this itinerary specifically for you.

What is the best time of year to take this tour?

October to March is the ideal travel window for this itinerary. December and January offer the coolest and most comfortable temperatures across all destinations. February and March are excellent months with pleasant weather and fewer crowds. We strongly advise against travelling this route between May and June due to extreme heat exceeding 45°C, and between July and September due to the monsoon season.

How far in advance should I book this tour?

We recommend booking a minimum of 60 to 90 days in advance, particularly for travel between October and February which is peak season across all destinations. Early booking ensures availability at preferred heritage hotels and secures limited-capacity flights on the Khajuraho to Varanasi route. Last-minute bookings may be accommodated subject to availability.

Do I need a visa to visit India?

Most international travellers require a Tourist e-Visa for India, which is applied for online through the official Indian government immigration portal. The e-Visa is typically processed within 72 hours and is available for 30, 90, or 180 days depending on your nationality. We strongly recommend applying at least 7 days before your intended arrival date. Please check current visa requirements for your specific nationality before booking.

What ID documents do I need to carry during the tour?

Foreign nationals must carry their original passport at all times throughout the tour. A valid passport is mandatory for entry to all ASI-protected monuments including the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort, Qutub Minar, Fatehpur Sikri, and the Khajuraho temple complex, as separate foreigner ticket counters require passport verification. Indian nationals must carry a valid government-issued photo ID such as an Aadhaar card, voter ID, or passport. Hotel check-ins, monument entries, and security checkpoints across all eight destinations will require ID at various points during the journey.

Is the Taj Mahal visit included and when do we visit?

Yes, the Taj Mahal visit is fully included. We visit at sunrise on Day 6 — the single most beautiful time to experience the monument, when early morning light transforms the white marble through a sequence of colours from pale silver to blushing pink to brilliant white. The Taj Mahal is closed every Friday, and our itinerary is planned to ensure your visit never falls on a closure day.

What is the Ganga Aarti in Varanasi and is it included?

The Ganga Aarti is a spectacular nightly fire ritual performed by brahmin priests simultaneously on the steps of Dashashwamedh Ghat on the banks of the Ganges River in Varanasi. Priests carry large multi-tiered brass oil lamps, incense, conch shells, and yak-tail fans in a highly choreographed devotional ceremony accompanied by chanting and Sanskrit hymns. The ceremony has been performed every single evening without interruption for centuries. Attendance at the Ganga Aarti on Day 9 evening is fully included in your package.

Are the Khajuraho temples suitable for all travellers including children?

Yes. While the Khajuraho temples are internationally famous for their erotic sculptural panels, these carvings represent only approximately 10% of the total sculpture across the complex. The temples are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and are visited by families and school groups from across India and the world daily. Your guide will contextualise the sculptures within their historical, philosophical, and artistic significance. Parents can guide the experience for younger children according to their own judgement.

How do we travel from Khajuraho to Varanasi on Day 9?

Two options are available. The recommended option is by flight from Khajuraho Airport (HJR) to Varanasi Airport (VNS), approximately 1 hour, operated by IndiGo and Air India. The alternative is by train, which requires a road transfer of approximately 117 km to Satna Railway Station followed by a 6 to 7 hour train journey, making the total travel time approximately 9 to 10 hours. We recommend the flight to maximise your time in Varanasi and arrive comfortably before the evening Ganga Aarti. Please inform us of your preference at the time of booking.

What type of vehicles are used for transfers and sightseeing?

All transfers and sightseeing throughout the tour are conducted in private air-conditioned vehicles. Vehicle type is selected based on group size — typically a Toyota Innova or equivalent for couples and small groups, and a larger tempo traveller or coach for bigger groups. All vehicles are well-maintained, insured, and driven by experienced professional drivers familiar with every route on this itinerary.
